Electric cars are a very popular option in today’s marketplace. Many people are deciding to switch to an electric vehicle instead of getting another gasoline-fueled car. One of the main reasons is because an electric vehicle is better for the environment. However, what are some of the reasons why they are good for the environment?

Electric Cars Create Less Pollution

Electric cars do not use any fossil fuels to operate. They run on batteries and therefore do not emit the same toxins that gas-fueled vehicles do. This in turn helps the environment. Often, people do not think about the pollution that is caused by their vehicles. Even lawnmowers create a lot of pollution.

All this pollution from gas-powered vehicles has a lasting effect on the environment. Consider how a gas-fueled vehicle hurts the environment:

  • The ozone layer: Above the earth rests the ozone layer, which protects everyone from the rays of the sun. However, the toxins that are released through the tailpipe on your car are destroying it every day, which causes more and more harmful UV rays to reach the people below.
  • Air quality: The toxins that are emitted through gas-powered cars deplete the air quality. Every day people breathe in the tiny toxic particles from the cars that are all around them.

The fact is that an electric car simply does not emit the toxins that a regular car does. An electric car does not even have a tailpipe. This is because the car runs on electricity, which does not burn any fossil fuels, which is the leading contributor to the pollution caused by regular cars.

So, when you see an electric car you know that it is not contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer or the creation of acid rain. Of course, the lifecycle of an electric car does include some pollution, but when compared to a regular car, there is no comparison.

Regardless, the facts cannot be denied about how little electric cars pollute. Moreover, most people can drive a fully-charged electric car without worrying about needing to find an electric car charging station as most people are not taking their vehicles for long trips, though this does need to be considered.

However, as time passes, more charging stations will be created. The efficiency of charging an electric car will increase over time, too.

Electric Cars Offset Their Own Pollution

Electric cars are not entirely exempt from pollution. This can come as a shock to some people who think that an electric car is entirely “green.” Still, electric cars are good for the environment.

Some studies show that when an electric car is manufactured it can create more emissions during that part of its life cycle than a gas-powered vehicle. For example, a medium-sized electric car can produce around 15 percent more emissions than a comparable gas-powered car. The number can go up to 68 percent more emissions when it is a long-range vehicle.

During the entire life of the cars, however, they produce far less pollution than gas-powered vehicles. Most of their pollution comes from the manufacturing of electric cars. Like other cars, electric vehicles are made in factories that produce pollution. None of this should dissuade you, however. Consider these factors:

  • Electric cars’ emissions are extremely low. When they are being driven, their emissions are not even comparable to gas-powered cars.
  • They offset their own pollution. Smaller electric cars can offset the pollution made during the manufacturing stage within six months of being driven. For larger cars, it can be offset within 18 months.
  • Technology is improving. Electric cars have been around for longer than most people realize, but have been gaining traction in recent years. Therefore, big improvements keep taking place. As technology improves, the ability of the electric car to be even more efficient.

Additionally, electric cars use the grid to power up. You need to know what the grid uses to power up. In some places, coal is still used. However, that is changing over to reusable energy in many places.

What Materials Make Up Electric Cars?

The positive effect that electric cars have on the environment cannot be ignored. Think about these adverse health conditions that are made worse and more prevalent because of pollution. Electric cars, since they do not emit the toxins that cause these diseases and issues, would help cause them to lessen over time.

Electric Cars Require Less Maintenance

An electric car does not have the same amount of moving parts that a gas-powered vehicle has. Therefore, it does not have the same maintenance that a gas-powered car has. Consider all the maintenance that a gas-powered car needs.

  • Oil changes: Every few months, you need to take your vehicle in to see a mechanic who will change the oil. Oil is a fossil fuel, and when you change the oil you are polluting the environment.
  • Engine coolant: Electric cars do not have an engine that needs fossil fuels. The engines in regular cars have many moving parts and need toxic coolant to stay working.
  • Gasoline: Gasoline, which you need to fill your car with every week, is the main component of how your car pollutes, but it also needs to be constantly replenished with new fuel.
  • Exhaust parts: Since the engine on a gas-powered car creates exhaust, you must maintain the exhaust parts in the car, which will need to be replaced over time.

An electric car does not have the same maintenance nor the same costs related to maintenance that a gas-powered vehicle does. Yet, how is this connected with why electric cars are good for the environment?

Think about all the waste that is generated by the maintenance of a gas-powered vehicle. The oil is thrown aside. Engine coolant is toxic. Gasoline can spill at gas stations. Old engines get tossed into junkyards and can leak old toxins. Parts are discarded. The list can go on and on.

An electric car runs on a battery. While there is still maintenance involved with an electric car, it is not anywhere near the same level as a gas-powered car. The fact is that every time a gas-powered car is serviced, it pollutes. It may not be by burning fossil fuels, but the parts that have to get tossed still pollute.

How is an Electric Car Maintained?

Electric cars do not have the same maintenance requirements that gas-powered vehicles do, and this is because they do not use the same parts. For example, electric vehicles do not have upwards of two dozen parts that gas-powered vehicles do.

Additionally, gas-powered vehicles need to replace parts of the engine all the time, and the system needs to be periodically flushed. While these parts are not included in an electric car, that does not mean there is not much maintenance involved. However, the maintenance is minimal by comparison, and it creates less waste which benefits the environment.

Electric cars do not produce nearly as much waste as regular cars. People may be put off by the price tag on a new electric car, but the payoff is cheaper maintenance and less waste. Consider the yearly maintenance an electric car needs:

  • Each month, the tire pressure needs to be checked, along with other miscellaneous items, such as the wipers.
  • Two times each year, you need to clean the underside of the vehicle because of debris, such as road salt, that can accumulate from driving.
  • Around 7,500 miles, the tires should be rotated, along with a full car inspection that includes the brakes, battery, fluids, and safety features.

As you can see, there are periodic maintenance checks on electric cars. However, compared to those of fuel-powered cars, they are minimal.

Electric Cars Produce Less Noise Pollution

Electric cars are very quiet machines. Think about the last time you were close to a busy street. It can get very loud. The combustion of the engines gets loud. Or, consider the last time you were at a racetrack with many cars revving up all at once. Sometimes you even need ear protection.

Electric cars, by contrast, do not make nearly as much noise as their gas-powered counterparts. This is because they do not have the same kind of engine inside them. Moreover, they do not have tailpipes or the need for mufflers.

Regular vehicles are often modified to be even louder. You may have heard one of these cars in your neighborhood. While noise pollution may seem like a minor thing for the environment, it does have a big effect on people’s everyday lives. Consider what noise pollution does.

  • Adds stress: Life is stressful and the last thing you need is noise pollution to exacerbate your anxiety even more. For most people, a quiet environment is one in which they can recharge and relax. When you live near a busy street, this can be near impossible sometimes.
  • Annoying: Beyond the stressful implications of noise pollution, the noise of vehicles can just be annoying, especially when they are modified vehicles that make more noise than they normally would.
  • Contribute to health problems: The biggest concern with noise pollution is that it can contribute to serious health problems. Noise pollution can make your blood pressure rise, which can lead to an increased probability of a heart attack or even a stroke.
