6 Electric Cars That Have Liquid Cooled Batteries

If you have ever owned an electric vehicle, you know how expensive the batteries can be. Since liquid cooled batteries tend to deteriorate at a noticeably slower rate than other types of batteries, it would seem that all cars would have them installed by now. That is simply not the case. As such, you might be interested to know which electrics cars have liquid cooled batteries.

With non-liquid cooled batteries having a degradation rate of over 4% on average, one can easily see the former’s benefit. Therefore, it is important to understand the potential benefits of liquid cooled batteries and their impact on you as an owner. Continue reading to learn more about these batteries and the electric cars that currently use them.

6 Electric Vehicles That Use Liquid Cooled Batteries

Since there is still some debate over which type of battery is more effective in an electric vehicle, there are a number of options currently available in the market. However, liquid cooled batteries are becoming more and more popular. Here are six electric cars that now incorporate liquid cooled batteries into their design.

Tesla

Tesla has long produced car batteries that are known not to overheat. This is obviously an advantage to electric car owners, particularly those in warm weather climates. Tesla batteries are liquid cooled to within a range of 40 to 50 degrees Celsius. While that might sound hot, it is quite frigid when compared to the typical conditions that batteries are forced to endure.

Tesla has found that this temperature range is ideal for the shorter trips that electric cars typically go through. While the battery can get a little warmer than the stated range, that does not happen very much. This means that Tesla batteries typically have much longer lifespans than other types of electric cars that have no thermal management system built into their design.

BMW i-3

The BMW i-3 has become an extremely popular commuter electric vehicle in recent years. Thanks to its liquid cooled battery, the battery range is quite good at an average of 125 miles. Many drivers report that they can go as far as 150 miles or more between charges when conserving other vehicle features.

The battery on the BMW i-3 is also ideal from the perspective that there are few reports of any issues. BMW advertises that the battery is designed to last for the lift of the vehicle, which is currently 15 years or more. They also guarantee that the battery will still have 70% of its full capacity after eight years or 100,000 miles.

BMW i-8

While not being a fully electric car, the BMW i-8 is a plug-in hybrid that makes use of a lithium-ion cooled battery. When running purely on electric, this small battery can go about 50 miles, which is very respectable for a hybrid. When combined with gas, this car can go for a range of roughly 400 miles.

As a roadster, many i-8 owners like to take this car out on the highway. That can produce high temperatures over the course of an average drive. The liquid cooled battery is sufficient to keep the battery from overheating. It has good range and is rated to last for well over a decade before sufficiently degrading to the point that it needs to be replaced.

Chevy Volt

The Chevy Volt is another hybrid that has an incredible range thanks to its liquid cooled battery. You are looking a range of 53 miles in fully electric mode, with that extending to a combined range of 420 miles when using gasoline.

Chevrolet uses liquid to cool the batteries in all Volt models. This type of thermal management system is believed to be ideal, particularly for small electric cars where range is always an issue. Even in extremely hot climates, the battery in a Chevy Volt will last for a decade. That is good enough for 150,000 miles or 6,000 total drives.

Ford Focus

Ford created an all-electric version of its popular Focus back in 2011. It continues to be one of the more popular electric vehicles on the market today. From its very first year, Ford used a liquid coolant to regulate the temperature of its battery.

The results have been amazing. The battery life has been extended, while the range for each drive is noticeably longer as well. While the batteries may be more expensive than their air-cooled counterparts, that expense is more than made up by the fact that they rarely need to be replaced during the life of the vehicle.

Jaguar i-Pace

If you are looking for a luxury electric car, they don’t come much better equipped than the Jaguar i-Pace. This car seemingly has it all, including incredible range. Thanks to its liquid cooled battery, this car can get a range of between 234 and 292 miles between charges. It is not uncommon for drivers to report that they can go over 290 miles in ideal conditions.

The Jaguar i-Pace also uses a refined electric motor that takes advantage of the increased battery life. This is a vehicle that conserves power wherever it can, meaning that drivers get incredible performance without having to pay for it in terms of reduced range. It is a win-win situation. There have been almost no reports of battery problems with the Jaguar i-Pace.

Why is it Important to Cool a Lithium Battery?

The batteries in an electric vehicle are key to its success. In order for consumers to purchase more electric vehicles, batteries must have sufficient range. Unfortunately, the heat that is generated in a typical electric car is really a drain on the battery. This limits its life and reduces the number of miles that can be driven between charges.

The average battery used in an electric vehicle today degrades roughly 4.2% per year. This means that after just five years of driving, the average car will lose about 17 miles or range per charge. This is significant given the fact that electric vehicles are already limited in their range to begin with. Keeping the battery cool will extend its life, both in the near and long term.

What Do Liquid Cooled Batteries Bring to the Electric Car Market?

Developers have already discovered that batteries that are liquid cooled will decline slower than those that are air-cooled. In some cases, the battery life per charge is extended by 2% when it is liquid cooled.

It is important to keep in mind that the frequency of driving an electric vehicle does not contribute to a reduced battery life. However, driving in extreme temperatures does. This means that liquid cooled batteries bring even more benefits. It can extend the overall life of the battery, which is significant given how expensive they are.

With the six vehicles already mentioned, it is evident that the technology exists to make electric vehicles a viable contender with combustible gas vehicles. The key is to extend the range and to create a battery that is long lasting. If liquid cooled batteries continue to hold to this promise, then more electrical vehicle models should be making use of them soon.

Wrap-Up

Now that electric vehicles have been on the market for many years, it is time to focus on making them even more convenient. The number one criticism of electric cars is the limited range that drivers get between charges. Liquid cooled batteries are one way to answer this problem and give drivers what they have been asking for.
